Description

Bald Butte is a fine place to see mid-Spring wildflowers. The balsamroot display can be particularly nice, and there are no crowds (as there are at Dog Mountain and elsewhere). The only downside is that sometimes dirt bikers visit the summit, but that is not enough to dissuade me from visiting every May.

Refer to the Oregon Hikers Field Guide page for more details and directions for the hike.

Directions

Take I-84 east to Hood River to Exit 64 for White Salmon and Government Camp. Turn right, and then right again immediately. Drive 0.3 miles to a four-way stop. Keep straight here on Highway 35 south.

Drive 15 miles and turn left on Smullen Road, which is one mile past the Hood River Ranger Station.

Drive 0.3 miles and make a left onto a gravel road. Park in the circular parking area here.
