Description

Catherine Creek is contained within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. It is a beautiful area with various mostly easy trail options so that everyone can enjoy the wildflowers which start blooming here early each Spring.

During the month of March, lovely purple Grass Widows (Olsynium douglasii) blanket the fields on both sides of the old highway. By April, these have yielded to Common Camas (Camassia quamash), Meadow Death-camas (Zigadenus venenosus), and a host of others.

Directions

Take Interstate 84 east to Hood River. Take exit 64 and drive north across the Hood River Bridge ($2 toll for passenger cars). Turn right onto Washington SR-14, and drive east for 5.8 miles. Turn left at Rowland Lake onto County Road 1230 (Old Highway No. 8), which follows the north end of the lake.

You will see the parking area on your left (north side of the road) approximately 1.3 miles from SR-14. If you are visiting on a weekend, you may want to carpool because the parking area is generally full.

There is a pit toilet, but no other facilities. The closest "real" rest area is at Chamberlain Lake, three miles east along Highway 14.

Dogs are allowed, but must be kept on-leash.

UPDATE 03/2008: There have been numerous break-ins at the Catherine Creek parking area. I strongly advise you not to leave any valuables in your car!
